Who we are
Our 3,800 staff work in a range of roles to supply electricity to a population of around 2.8 million homes and businesses in South East Queensland. With $7.3 billion in total assets, ENERGEX has more than 85 years’ industry experience. We are a Queensland Government Owned Corporation (GOC), whose two shareholders are the Treasurer and the Minister for Mines and Energy.
what we do
The electricity supply industry is organised like links in a chain, connecting the separate elements of generation, transmission, distribution and retail.
GENERATION
Generation companies produce electricity and compete to sell it in the National Electricity Market. As electricity cannot be stored or branded to distinguish its generator, all electricity is centrally pooled and scheduled to meet demand. This pool is managed by the National Electricity Market Management Company (NEMMCO).
TRANSMISSION
Electricity is supplied to ENERGEX through a high-voltage transmission network that is owned and operated by the Queensland Electricity Transmission Corporation Limited (Powerlink), another GOC.
DISTRIBUTION
This is where ENERGEX comes in. Distributors convert electricity from the transmission network into high and low voltages and deliver it to homes and businesses. At ENERGEX, our primary role is to distribute electricity to South East Queensland. We own and are responsible for the building and maintenance of all the electricity distribution infrastructure within our area of supply. Our talented tradespeople are supported by finance, marketing, human resources, IT, customer service people and our control centre to help them keep the power on for our customers.
RETAIL
The retail sector sells electricity and manages customer accounts and billing. This part of the ENERGEX business was sold by the Queensland Government in 2007 to Origin and AGL. Full retail competition was later introduced allowing customers to choose their retailer.
CUSTOMERS
As the electricity distributor, we are primarily responsible for building and maintaining the electricity network and delivering a safe and reliable electricity supply to the South East Queensland community. We are also responsible for meter readings and connecting homes and businesses to the electricity network when requested by retailers on behalf of their customers.
