Safety
Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our employees. That’s why we operate in a safety-first environment, with a “no injuries” goal and a number of strategies to keep safety planted firmly in the minds of employees, managers and our Board.
These include:
- A Set-up for Safety Success Program which targets specific workgroups with audit, coaching and system improvement activities.
- Risk Assessment Training to ensure workers in high-risk areas are competent to identify hazards and control the associated risks.
- Safety Operational Committees to comment and feedback on safety issues associated with new technologies, policies or procedures.

Proactive health and wellbeing programs
As part of our wellbeing program, "Energising ENERGEX", several programs run throughout the organisation to assist our people in improving their health and safety. These include the annual corporate influenza vaccination and skin check programs.
"Energising ENERGEX" is also about promoting physical activity. Each year ENERGEX sponsors employees to participate in a range of activities including triathlons, runs and cycling events. Individual advice and information sheets are available on appropriate lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activities and good nutritional practices. We also offer an employee assistance program which provides a free, short-term counselling service to staff and their immediate family members to help deal with problems of a personal, family related or employment nature.
Additionally, a number of staff within our Human Resources division are dedicated to providing expert advice on workers compensation, rehabilitation and medical services.
Safety first culture
Central to ENERGEX’s culture is our commitment to the health and safety of our employees, contractors, customers and the community. By focusing on our key value – Put Safety First – we aim to be an industry leader in safety performance and to achieve our vision of zero injuries. To achieve this, ENERGEX has developed comprehensive and detailed policies, guidelines, rules, programmes and other initiatives.

Zero injuries – our goal
There are a number of programs in place to help us achieve a work environment free of injury and illness. As part of our world-class Safety Management System, a five-year strategic safety plan has been implemented to embed the safety-first culture and provide a central framework within ENERGEX.
In particular, the Occupational Health and Safety Group are currently implementing a behaviour Safety program which targets attitudinal change, known as the Zero Incident Process (ZIP). ZIP is designed to empower people to take control of their personal safety by becoming more effective within the systems they work in.

Safety survey
ENERGEX has recently conducted a survey of our safety culture, focussing on the four areas of leadership, work environment, practices and people. The survey is part of the Zero Incidents Process (ZIP) program that is currently being rolled out across ENERGEX inline with the five-year strategic safety plan.

Enhancing our safety reporting
ENERGEX has endorsed the implementation of a Health Safety and Environment Management system named eSafe. The eSafe database and safety management system was launched in 2007. The eSafe system records, manages, tracks and reports on all safety and environment related data for efficient and effective recording and reporting to the organisation. The Occupational Health and Safety Group are able to analyse safety trends and causes, to develop and implement preventative measures that improve worker and network safety.
