“What really appealed to me about Energex is the wide variety of career development and career progression opportunities it offers. Energex has given me the chance to gain experience in vastly different areas – I’ve been involved in everything ranging from how to get better productivity to how to reduce carbons emissions in our fleet.
The electricity industry is incredibly complex and I enjoy having contact with the people who are responsible for designing, building and maintaining an infrastructure that’s so important to every part of our community. It’s gratifying to know you have a job that provides an essential service to people.
The blue collar/white collar mix keeps things interesting. It means you get more exposure to the field-based work performed by Energex and the sheer scale of the organisation means there’s always something new to learn or experience.
There’s a great atmosphere here. People have an appetite for change, an open mind and a great sense of humour. It creates a very positive energy around the place; you feel like anything can be achieved.
My most challenging project so far was when the Queensland Government decided to put Energex's retail customer base up for sale. This was a two-year project that involved many people, and I was very fortunate to be able to lead the Contact Centre's role in it, including the Customer Centre integration and separation of the retail customer base.
I was involved from the initial contract schedule development and tender submissions right through to an 18-month transitional phase and the final change integration of separating the retail customers from Energex and their migration to the new owners.
It was an intense change management exercise with a high profile because of the Government involvement and the huge number of people working on or affected by the project. I found it incredibly rewarding and satisfying to have been part of something that had such a positive outcome.
My ambition is to do more training so I can progress into more senior leadership roles within the company. There are so many opportunities to be a part of Government-driven projects, reviews and legislative changes – the challenges you can be exposed to at Energex are pretty much endless.“
